VQ has traveled to and lived in many places, including (but not limited to) France, Spain, Brazil, the Caribbean, Germany, and the United States.
In the Caribbean, she observed more natural hairstyles than anywhere else, or straightened natural hair. When she lived in Brazil (ten years ago), most of her friends straightened their hair, but most wear it naturally curly now. In Europe, she finds a great number of people with natural hair or an afro, a shift that came along with the natural hair movement (similar to the shift in the United States).
“There’s definitely a shift, and I think it’s worldwide,” VQ said.
However, she notices that in many countries in Africa, there are great numbers of Black women wearing long, straight weaves — so she wonders if they are experiencing a shift in the opposite direction.
Overall, VQ supports Black women wearing their hair however they prefer.
“It’s about you and your confidence to wear your hair the way you see fit,” she said.
VQ works in insurance, a very conservative field, also a very masculine field and not very Black. Despite this environment, she has the confidence to wear her hair in any style she desires.
“Your hair does not define you,” VQ said. “We can also play with our hair if we want to.”
